A mobile app to improve patient care: Re-defining Convatec’s Product MVP

The Challenge

Convatec, a global medical products and technologies company, was attempting to develop a digital companion app for their existing Ostomy Patient Support Program (me+). The app was intended to deliver education resources, nutritional resources, and activity logs with the goal of creating a more comprehensive and accessible patient experience.

As the project progressed, significant concerns arose regarding the effectiveness of the existing design. I joined the team to help spin up an effort to rapidly ideate and redesign key aspects of the experience and the overall design language.

Throughout the design analysis process I identified numerous visual accessibility issues, inconsistencies, and issues with affordance.  During the rapid ideation process I created a new visualization of what an action-focused dashboard could like like. As this concept was refined, I worked to establish an updated, accessible, and standardized design language for the project.

In addition to visual refinement, we conducted a series of rapid user tests and interviews to elicit feedback about potential pain points. During these sessions we became aware of the need for easily accessible and digestible instructional videos to support newer ostomates become familiar and comfortable managing their condition.

To solve this problem, I designed a sequence of short-form videos, in a style now popularized by social-media apps, that would be able to be controlled via gestural interactions such as swiping, facilitating interaction during delicate situations. Content was produced in collaboration with influencers popular within the Ostomate community.
